My Teaching Role

Learning & Literacy

I am a special education teacher, currently teaching in the Learning & Literacy program in Calgary, AB. I work with grade 5-7 students that have significant learning disabilities and/or ADHD, along with other learning challenges. It is an inclusive program, and I work with the core teachers to provide a program for students that have all the accommodations and adaptations needed to succeed in their classroom! I do intensive reading assessments and intervention, along with support literacy in the classrooms. I have become an expert at integrating assistive technology in the classroom for students that need it to be successful. Send me a DM if you have any questions about anything above as I love to share my knowledge and have conversations about the ways that I teach!

Something you can start right away to help struggling students in class

Flexible Groupings!

Consider using your students strengths to build some intentional, creative groups in your classroom. Perhaps one of your students is below grade level in reading, but is a fantastic artist. Create a group that would assign different students different roles. Perhaps the struggling reader could be responsible for the visualization drawing or the diagram or representing knowledge through art, another student could be responsible for the reading, and another for the writing portion of the task. Together, they work together to complete the job. This takes practice and lots of trial and error, but if your students start to build confidence in the areas they are STRONG IN, they will begin to take risks in the areas they are not-so-strong in. DM ME TO CHAT! I love this stuff.

Teachers Pay Teachers?

YES!

I started my TPT store back in 2013... when there were not too many sellers. I uploaded a few resources that I just happened to have made recently (with NO thumbnails, descriptions, or any of that good stuff). Mostly, I used TPT as a resource for purchasing units and lessons for my own classroom. In 2020, I decided to get more serious about TPT after I started my teacher Instagram account, and have been LOVING creating for other teachers. My store is still small, but has some great classroom decor, digital decor (hello Google Classroom Headers and Agenda Slides), and ELA resources with a focus on reading strategies! Check it out:

I am a Special Ed. and literacy teacher, specifically working with students that have significant learning disabilities & ADHD.

I teach middle school and am engaging daily with older students that are still learning to read.

Teaching striving readers is my passion, and bringing the Science of Reading into literacy instruction has brought so much success to my students and co-teachers.

Throughout my teaching career, I have taught every grade from K-8 with a special focus on literacy, social emotional wellness, and learning disabilities in the inclusive classroom.

When not in the classroom, you can find me outside camping or exploring the Rocky Mountains with my husband and two boys. I love to write, connect with other educators, and inspire others through my personal stories & experiences in teaching.

So glad you are here!
